Welcome!

The tiny, often insignificant elements of the natural world particularly slow decay have always fascinated me. Be it mummified remains, in limbo for millennia, a rotting branch over a period of years or, fungi fruiting and devolving in a matter of days.

I strive to instil this ‘life’ into my work through the utilisation of a variety of materials and techniques. As a canvas for my work, I chose to carve miniature sculpture and netsuke, a Japanese art form of functional sculpture small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of one’s hand.

Each piece, though small in size, when held and examined closely, reveals a wealth of fine detail. Illusions such as that of rusted metal surfaces, decaying wood, and frayed stitching, created by the use of different materials and carving techniques bring forth the element of realism in each piece.

You can get introduced to my work on my “Gallery”  page.

Daruma Toy in progress

Daruma Toy - a work in progress, after Michael Birch. I chose this design (after spending a day with one of Michael’s originals), for its simple form, which would allow me to attempt inlay work again, since being restricted to the use of only one hand for the better part of 2010. Materials: Reclaimed ivory and tortoiseshell, with pink pearl shell.
