Hand tools are my preference for carving. Initial roughing may be done with rotary handpieces, but the bulk of the detail carving and texturing is done with hand tools - knives, scalpels, scrapers, and gravers.
Magnification:
I use a 3.5x prism binocular loupe made by Zeiss.
